National Multi-stakeholder Dialogue on Displacement and Loss & Damage, Fiji

Suva, 4 December 2022 – The Platform on Disaster Displacement (PDD), in partnership with the Fijian Red Cross Society, , organized a multi-stakeholder dialogue on displacement and loss and damage titled “Operationalizing global commitments and mechanisms at the national level in Fiji“.

This multi-stakeholder dialogue was organized in support of PDD’s Project to Avert, Minimize and Address Disaster Displacement (PAMAD), funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad). Fiji is one of the project’s implementation countries, alongside Kenya, Guatemala, and Bangladesh.

PAMAD’s global scope spans five pillars, namely: (1) Knowledge Development; (2) Displacement Risk Assessment; (3) Preparedness for Disaster Displacement; (4) Integrated Planning Process; (5) Access to Finance.

The event was attended by 27 representatives of Fijian governmental and non-governmental actors (Ministry of Economy, Fijian Red Cross, Pacific Community of Churches, The Pacific Community, academia, the International Organization for Migration), and was an opportunity to reflect on policy advances at COP27, specifically on loss and damage, and their relevance for Fiji, as well as to have a discussion on national climate change impacts, and priorities for climate action.

The event allowed PDD to engage with partners working on human mobility and climate change at national and local level in Fiji, and to seek inputs from experts and practitioners on the scope and focus of the project activities to be implemented through the PAMAD project.

Discussions focused primarily on planned relocations from climate-affected areas and on the relevance of participation of communities at-risk in decision-making and implementation of related standards and procedures.
