Virtual workshop on Loss & Damage and Human Mobility: Towards COP28

On November 20, 2023, the Platform on Disaster Displacement (PDD), in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), organized a virtual workshop on Loss & Damage and Human Mobility: Towards COP28.

The virtual briefing targeted UNFCCC negotiators from Guatemala and other AILAC Member States, and was attended by 30 government representatives. It provided an opportunity to discuss the evolution of Human Mobility topics in global climate policy discussion over the last decade, and their relevance for ongoing Loss & Damage processes. The briefing focused specifically on the coverage of displacement, migration and planned relocation topics under the work of the Transitional Committee and in its outcomes that will be discussed at the upcoming UNFCCC COP28 in Dubai. The last segment of the workshop also represented an opportunity for Guatemalan negotiators to discuss policy positions, messages and priorities on L&D, including human mobility, relevant to their upcoming engagement at COP28.

The event is part of IOM and PDD’s joint commitment to delivering capacity building on averting, minimising and addressing displacement for UNFCCC negotiators, expressed in activity 3 of the plan of action of the Task Force on Displacement of the WIM ExCom.
