Report – Access to Land for People Displaced in the Context of the Adverse Effects of Climate Change in Bangladesh

In the context of climate change, displacement is a rising global crisis which acutely affects Bangladesh due to its exposure to extreme events and slow onset processes like riverbank erosion (a particular concern in regions like Sirajganj).

This report underscores the severity of economic and non-economic loss and damage experienced by displaced communities, which in turn magnify their vulnerability to profound disruptions of livelihoods, land ownership, basic amenities, knowledge about land and land laws, mental well-being, social networks and cultural heritage. The report presents a set of actionable recommendations and community-driven approaches to land governance and resource allocation which can enhance resilience and support durable solutions, including by strengthening legal protections to safeguard land tenure rights and inclusive governance and decision-making mechanisms on land and livelihoods. Recognizing the growing significance of land access and livelihood security in the global Loss and Damage discourse, the report also advocates to strengthen research and training at both national and local level into further research on equitable land policies, tenure security, and sustainable livelihood strategies as fundamental mechanisms for mitigating the adverse effects of displacement in the context of disasters and climate change.
